Projector lamps are the most replaced part of a projector, and the type of lamp that you choose will be slightly determined by the capacity in which your projector is used.

Without further ado, I'll get right to the point and give you a brief list of factors to consider when you're in the market for a new lamp. If you follow these steps, your projector will thank you for it, and you'll get the value in your lamp that you paid for:

  1. ensure the lamp you purchase provides sufficient light
  2. try to purchase a lamp that promises a long service life
  3. check the service life rating of the lamp your considering to purchase
  4. determine the type of usage for your lamp

When a lamp goes out, you have to take into consideration that each projector requires a specific replacement lamp. Each projector has it's own set of replacement lamp requirements so you'll need to ensure you're getting your lamps from the right source.

How many different kinds of projector lamps are there?

There are quite a few and I've given you the general lowdown of the of the most popular lamps below.

UHP lamps

There are a few types of lamps you can choose from when looking for a replacement. Many lamps use mercury and so do UHP lamps (Ultra High Performance). The UHP boasts upwards of a 2000 to 5000 hour life span. At one time Phillips suggested their UHP lamps run for over 10,000 hours. Another brand that uses the UHP lamps is Sanyo.

P VIP Lamps

If you're looking for an efficient and affordable lamp, the OSRAM P-VIP lamp is a great choice. They provide uniform light distribution, prolonged lamp life and amazing light output. The P VIP lamps are high pressure mercury lamps which can be used in a projection application, projection TVS and video projectors as well. Certain OSRAM lamps can run for up to 8000 hours.

Metal Halide

Metal Halide lamps are generally used in smaller, more compact projectors because they take up much less space than your typically sized projector bulbs and they product an amazing amount of light for their size. Halide lamps are mostly geared towards home theatres, but are just as impressive when used in a projector and boast upwards of a 4000 hour life span.

Halogen Lamps

If you're looking for a generally cheaper replacement lamp, the halogen lamp is your choice but you'll have to note that along with being inexpensive, they also have a very small life span than most other lamps. Halogen projector lamps last from approximately 500 to 1500 hours.

Xenon Arc Lamps

Then there's the Xenon lamps which generally have an awesome colour range and use Xenon instead of using mercury. Xenon lamps are very bright and are generally more expensive. If you're willing to invest in a much brighter lamp than most lamps, the Xenon is the way to go. The drawback to Xenon lamps is their life span as they have a measurably less lifespan than most UHP lamps. With the Xenon lamp you can expect around 2000 hours of service.

A tip on prolonging the life of your lamp

Remember to always place your projector in a safe area so as to avoid bumping and possibly damaging it or your lamp. Also ensure there's enough air circulation as the more air that's able to circulate around your projector, the longer your lamp will last.
